E-Trash or E-Waste Management is an abandoned electronic appliance after using it completely. It can be for refurbishment, reuse, resale, reusable materials recovery, or complete disposal. Faster up-gradation of appliances is forcing consumers to discard old appliances. Because of this, there is an increase in e-waste which is harmful if not disposed properly.
WHY IS E-WASTE MANAGEMENT IMPORTANT?
The manufacturing of electronic appliances requires a ton of chemicals like mercury, lead, cadmium that are harmful to people and the environment. When these appliances become e-waste and at disposal not properly handled, these chemicals end up in the soil, water, and air which becomes a threat to the environment. To neutralize this threat E-Waste management is important.
CHALLENGES FACED BY E-TRASH MANAGEMENT :
- The E-Waste management sector is informal sector because any government bodies don’t fund or run it in our country.
- Poor awareness within the consumers which therefore leads to the bulk of e-waste.
- Difficulty in enlisting the e-waste which therefore leads to less collection of e-waste.
- Lack of funds and investment to finance profitable improvements in e-waste management.
HOW E-WASTE IS HANDLED?
- Many discarded machines contain usable parts which could be salvaged and combined with other used equipment to create a working unit.
- Rather than disposing of the whole waste some parts will just need a repair and they will be good to use.
- Materials will disintegrate completely by the unit because they are of no use.
- Outdated e-waste materials will kept to resale again because they are good to use.
WHY IS E-TRASH HARMFUL?
- E-waste consists of toxic metals like Hg, Pb, Cd. Cr which produces toxins.
- They are the sources of carcinogens like Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxin.
- They cause several health problems to all those who are directly involve with the e- waste processing, as they contain radioactive isotopes.
E-Waste recycling is important but it should be safe and standardized .
