Swapeco, a IIIT Delhi students’ initiative, started with a vision to bring about a systematic change in recyclable waste management problems of India, is now migrating to a new name called Scrap Uncle. While the name changes, the goal remains the same but stronger – alleviating the solid waste management crisis in India.

Getting closer to its efficient waste management goal each day, Swapeco has more than 20,000 registered users from Delhi and has diverted more than 3,00,000 Kgs of recyclables from landfills to the recycling units.

Until recently, households and enterprises had been selling their scrap to traditional kabadiwalas. But there were many problems associated with this such as unregulated prices, time mismatch, and an unverified system. Many of the traditional kabadiwalas would often cherry-pick useful items and throw away the remaining scrap to landfills. As a solution to all these issues faced by the households and the enterprises, a group of students from IIIT Delhi came up with the online kabadiwala, Swapeco, now known as SCRAP UNCLE

Based in Delhi, Scrap Uncle provides an easy-to-use digital recycling platform where users can schedule a doorstep pickup for their recyclables instantly. Once a pickup is scheduled, trained and verified executives of the pickup team visit to collect the scrap, weigh it using the ISO-certified digital weighing scale, and pay the user in their desired mode of payment. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, Scrap Uncle ensures a hygienic and safe exchange process and prioritizes all parties’ wellbeing.

Scrap Uncle offers a variety of scrap that can be sold for recycling such as paper, plastics, metal, cardboard, light, and heavy e-waste, etc.
